One of the gender-specific cancers is gynecologic cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are five main types of gynecologic cancer. These are cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar.

In 2018, cervix uteri or cervical cancer was among the ten most common cancers in women in Singapore. This cancer is beatable, thanks to the cervical cancer treatment in Singapore, but you can also prevent it by knowing if you are at risk of developing one.

Here are the risk factors of cervical cancer according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention :

   1. HPV infection

Similar to HIV, HPV or Genital human papillomavirus is a virus transmitted during sexual intercourse. It is one of the primary causes of cervical cancer in women. HPV infection usually shows no symptoms. You can prevent contracting the virus by getting HPV vaccines, having safe sex with one partner.

   2. HIV infection

HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is a virus transmitted during sexual intercourse. HIV attacks the immune system. It could result in AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) if neglected. HIV does not cause cervical cancer, but it significantly weakens the immune system. If the immune system is weak, it is harder for the body to fight infections, such as HPV infection, which causes cervical cancer. HIV could also affect the effectiveness of cancer treatments, including brachytherapy in Singapore.

    3. Smoking

Tobacco smoking has been linked to the development of many cancers, including lung, colon, liver, and mouth, among others. Cervical and breast cancers are not far-fetched as well. Quitting tobacco smoking could help improve the success rate of cervical and breast cancer treatment in Singapore.

    4. Usage of birth control pills

Women who have taken birth control and oral contraceptives for more than five years are at a higher risk of developing cervical cancer. The chances decrease once the woman stops taking contraceptives.

     5. Multiple full-term pregnancies

Hormonal changes and a weaker immune system during pregnancy increases the susceptibility to HPV of a woman.

Fortunately, you can beat cervical cancer with early prevention and rigorous cervical cancer treatment in Singapore.
