Everyone wants a picture-perfect smile. Especially today where social media has been influencing a huge part of our daily living, posting our flawless smiles becomes a priority.

Many people, especially the younger generation, are becoming more self-conscious and tend to develop insecurities as an effect of social media exposure. It becomes so easy to be seen, and our online friends seemed to notice every detail of our posts.

For this reason, many of us are encouraged to get our teeth fixed so we could smile confidently on cam. However, most of us find wearing braces to be discouraging. Traditional metal braces with colorful brackets are after all, geeky and attention-getter.

It is a blessing that we do not have a limited option for dental braces today. For instance, lingual braces are becoming popular in Singapore due to their almost hidden feature.

But is lingual brace for you? Let’s find out.

What is a lingual brace?

A lingual brace is an innovation in dental braces wherein the braces are placed behind your teeth, on the side of the teeth, or on the tongue (the reason it is called lingual).

How much does a lingual brace cost?

The cost of applying a lingual brace varies depending on the length of treatment and the appliances your dentist will use for the operation.

In rough estimation, a lingual brace is double the price of conventional braces.

Is a lingual brace comfortable to wear?

Lingual braces pose several discomforts. Just like conventional braces, lingual braces cause initial dull pain which can last for days. Added to that is the discomfort on the tongue or the back of the teeth where the braces will be placed.

It can also cause lisp during the early stages of a treatment since some phonemes require the tongue to touch the back of the teeth.

A lingual brace can be used as a substitute for traditional braces and is less visible. However, there are dental problems where lingual braces may not be effective. It is better to consult your dentist first if you can be a candidate for such braces.
