What is Tenosynovitis?
Tenosynovitis, more commonly known as Trigger Finger, is the inflammation of the lining sheath that surrounds a tendon. The tendon is the cord that connects your muscles to bones. On the other hand, the covering protective sheath that lines your tendon is called synovium. Sometimes the cause of this inflammation is unknown. However, it can be a result of:
- Diseases that can cause inflammation
- Infection
- Injury
- Overuse
- Strain.
Tenosynovitis commonly affects the wrists, hands, ankles and feet because the tendons run across these joints. An infected cut to the hands and wrists that results in infectious tenosynovitis may require emergency hand surgery from the nearest Singapore hospital or clinic.
Symptoms
If you are suffering from tenosynovitis, you might be experiencing the following symptoms:
- Difficulty in moving your joints
- Swelling of the joint in the affected area
- Pain and tenderness in the joint
- Pain when moving the affected joint
- Redness along the length of the affected tendon
Experiencing fever, swelling, and redness might indicate an infection, especially if a puncture or cut led to these symptoms.
Treatment
If you are experiencing symptoms of trigger finger, immediately get treatment from the nearest Singapore clinic or hospital. The goal of the treatment is to relieve the pain and reduce inflammation of your finger. Here are some treatments your doctor might suggest.
- Use a splint or removable brace to help keep the tendons from moving.
- Apply a hot or cold compress to the affected area to help reduce pain and swelling.
- Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or corticosteroid injections to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
- Surgery to remove the inflammation around the tendon in rare cases.
